How to Power Up HIVE (and Why It Matters)

If you’ve spent any time on the Hive blockchain, you’ve seen two kinds of HIVE: the liquid coin you can send or trade, and Hive Power (HP) — HIVE that’s been staked to your account. “Powering up” is the act of converting liquid HIVE into HP. What Powering Up Actually Does

When you power up, you lock liquid HIVE into your account as Hive Power. It’s still yours — nothing leaves your wallet — but it’s now staked, which changes what it does for you.

If you’re a creator, RC is usually the practical reason to power up early: nothing is more frustrating than being unable to post because you’re out of credits.

The 13-Week Power-Down

Here’s the catch, and the reason to think before you stake. You can’t instantly convert HP back to liquid HIVE. Instead you start a power-down, which releases your stake in 13 equal weekly installments over roughly three months.

So if you power down 130 HP, you’d receive about 10 HP worth of liquid HIVE each week for 13 weeks. You can cancel a power-down at any time, and you keep earning and voting with whatever is still staked. This slow unlock is intentional — it discourages quick dumps and rewards people who commit to the network. But it means HP is not money you should count on accessing on short notice.

When Powering Up Is Worth It

There’s no universal answer, and prices and rewards vary, so treat this as a framework, not a promise:

• You plan to stick around. If you’re building an audience and posting regularly, HP pays off through smoother RC and curation over time.
• You want your votes to matter. If supporting other creators (or curating) is part of your plan, stake makes it real.
• You don’t need the liquidity soon. Only power up HIVE you’re comfortable locking for months.
